Safety at work is a crucial aspect of any water jetting organization’s operations, with far-reaching implications for both employees and the company. Safety is about preserving human well-being. It is an ethical and moral imperative to ensure that employees are not exposed to unnecessary risks while performing their duties. In doing so, employers protect their most valuable asset: their workforce. Preventing injuries, illnesses, and even fatalities in the workplace is fundamental, as it ensures that employees return home in good health, both physically and mentally.

Beyond the ethical dimension, safety also has a profound impact on the productivity of a company. When employees feel safe in their working environment, they are more likely to be focused and productive. A safe workplace minimizes the likelihood of accidents and unexpected downtimes. This translates into an increased efficiency.

Furthermore, workplace safety is not just a moral obligation; it is often a legal one. Many countries have stringent regulations and laws in place to govern workplace safety in the water jetting industry. Failure to adhere to them can result in serious legal consequences, including fines, penalties, and even potential business closures. So, compliance becomes imperative.

Safety at work also brings about cost savings for the organization. Workplace accidents can be financially draining, encompassing medical expenses, workers’ compensation claims, and potential legal costs. Moreover, accidents can lead to downtime and decreased productivity. By proactively investing in safety measures, businesses can mitigate these risks.

Reputation is another significant reason why safety at work is important. Companies that prioritize safety are often viewed more positively by employees, customers, and the public. A strong safety record can enhance a company’s reputation and attract top talent. In a competitive business landscape, a strong reputation for safety can be a key differentiator and a competitive advantage.

Employee morale is closely linked to safety in the workplace. When employees feel safe and supported, they are more likely to be satisfied with their job and have higher morale. This, in turn, can lead to lower turnover rates and higher retention of skilled workers. Satisfied and motivated employees are more likely to be productive and contribute positively to the organization’s goals.

Safety measures also often go hand in hand with quality control. When a company is committed to safety, it is more likely to implement quality control measures, leading to better products and services. The attention to detail required for safety can spill over into other aspects of the business, resulting in improved overall quality.

In the water jetting industry, adherence to strict safety regulations is not just a recommendation but a legal requirement. Compliance is very important, as non-compliance can lead to fines, legal issues, and even the suspension of operations. Ensuring safety at work is not only responsible business conduct but also necessary to maintain legal standing and avoid severe consequences.

In this regard, the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) serves as a valuable resource for promoting and enhancing workplace safety and health throughout the European Union. It provides resources and information to improve workplace safety and reduce work-related accidents and illnesses. In regard to EWJI, significant outreach work has been carried out on this issue, through the creation and dissemination of materials such as the Guide about health and safety, which is available on our website.

Equipping for safety: the essential PPE for your water jetting job

To ensure the safety of workers during water jetting tasks, it is vital that they use the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) tailored and certified to the specific nature of their work. This gear must be supplied by either their employer or the contracting company, as per the terms specified in the contracts, to address any potential hazards. Given the high-risk nature of high-pressure water jetting, it is imperative that suitable PPE is consistently worn, regardless of the presence of other safety measures.

Employees are obligated to adhere to state regulations, company policies, or the specific requirements outlined in the work permit’s risk assessment when using or wearing this equipment. It is also crucial that workers refrain from any intentional misuse or damage to the PPE.
