What information should be available before the automated operations start?
Before starting – or even planning – the job, someone from the contractor company must go to the workplace to do an on-site inspection, in order to compile the necessary information to plan correctly the operation and to provide the most appropriate means (equipment, personnel, etc.). This is essential, as the success or failure of the operation, as well as its safe execution depends on having all the essential information.
Furthermore, in addition to the work procedures – both general for automated water jetting activities and specific to the work to be carried out, which are dealt with in the following chapter – before starting the water jetting job, the operators must have been instructed on the measures to be taken in case of an incident or medical emergency.
For more information on this subject, read chapter 4 of the document “Guide about health and safety in water jetting” published by EWJI.
When working in especially hazardous conditions, all the information related to the potential injuries caused by those conditions must be available for all the team, and workers must have been informed about it previously. This information must be passed on to the medical staff to treat the injuries accordingly.
This is the case in jobs taking place in e.g., chemical/petrochemical facilities which have hazardous substances in them. In these situations, the manager of the facilities must inform the water jetting company about which products are in the objects being cleaned, how to protect the workers from them, and how to proceed in case of accidental exposure. A working permit or danger assessment needs to be discussed with the workers before beginning operations.
