The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) convened the 20th meeting of the Water Governance Initiative on January 28-29, 2025, in Paris, marking the 10th anniversary of the OECD Water Governance Principles. These principles have been instrumental in shaping public policies aimed at enhancing the management and protection of water resources globally.
During the meeting, the OECD emphasized the importance of effective water governance, highlighting the need for robust regulatory frameworks and strategic planning to address global water challenges and ensure a sustainable future. The work program for the 2025-2027 period was outlined, focusing on strengthening water governance policies and practices worldwide.
The OECD’s Water Governance Principles comprise 12 key recommendations for governments to improve water management. These principles not only aim for sustainable use of water resources but also promote collaboration among public and private sectors, as well as civil society, to ensure equitable access and protection of water.
