Specialized Training: The Essential Pillar of the Water Jetting Industry

The safe operation of high-pressure water jetting equipment requires competent and properly trained personnel. Water jetting and high-pressure industrial cleaning are fundamental tools across sectors such as industrial maintenance and sewage management throughout Europe. However, operating in these demanding environments means dealing with extremely high pressures capable of causing severe injuries or structural damage if equipment is used incorrectly.

Ensuring that all workers performing water jetting activities possess the appropriate qualifications is not a one-time event, but rather a continuous process requiring active collaboration from all stakeholders involved:

  • Employers: Hold the primary duty to provide adequate training, detailed instructions, and supervision, ensuring no worker takes on tasks without proper preparation.
  • Supervisors and Team Leaders: Must verify on-site that all training certifications are current and that team members fully understand the specific risks of each task.
  • Manufacturers and Suppliers: Form the foundation of equipment-specific training, providing essential manuals and guidelines on the safe limits of pumps, hoses, and nozzles.
  • Asset Owners and Clients: Must cooperate by communicating the specific hazards of their facilities and ensuring only authorized, trained personnel access the work zone.

True field competence is the combination of proper training, practical skills, and hands-on experience. Establishing standardized training timeframes helps ensure safety across different roles. For instance, within the industrial cleaning sector, clear guidelines recommend distinct initial training ranges:

  • Water Jetter (Technician / Operator): Between 12 and 36 hours of initial training focusing on the safe handling of manual tools, reaction forces, PPE selection, and emergency procedures.
  • Pump Operator: Between 16 and 36 hours to train the professional on pressure and flow control, equipment compatibility, and emergency shut-off procedures.
  • Project / Contract Managers: Between 12 and 20 hours of specific managerial training—built upon prior operational competence—focused on job planning, risk assessment, client coordination, and managing simultaneous operations (SIMOPS).

Consult the EWJI Guide of Roles

To help contractors, clients, and operators establish a common understanding of these competencies and responsibilities across Europe, the European Water Jetting Institute (EWJI) has officially launched its Guide of Roles in Water Jetting Activities. This reference document outlines the complete framework for industry roles and training benchmarks. Consult the guide for more details and download your copy.
