WJA urges precautions against frost hazards

The Water Jetting Association (WJA) has released a winter safety advisory urging contractors to take extra precautions as cold weather increases the likelihood of equipment freezing. Low temperatures can cause ice to form inside pumps, hoses and pipework, leading to dangerous pressure build-ups, hose whip and even the ejection of “ice bullets”.

The WJA highlights several essential measures for contractors, including fully draining or purging equipment before transport, carrying out safe and controlled thawing procedures, and never attempting to start a pump if freezing is suspected. The association also stresses the importance of storing equipment in frost-protected areas whenever possible.

According to the WJA, proper preparation and routine checks are key to preventing incidents during winter operations. By reinforcing these guidelines, the organisation aims to help companies maintain safe working environments throughout the colder months and reduce avoidable risks on site.
