What are the general requirements for safe automated water jetting equipment?

All the components of a water jetting system must comply with all regulations in the country in which they are used. Furthermore, in all of the European Union, water jetting units, tools, and attachments must carry CE machine compliance certificates.

All water jetting systems must meet the following general requirements:

  • The maximum permissible pressure limit of all the tools and attachments must be clearly indicated on the equipment.
  • The manufacturer’s name or logo must appear on all the components clearly and durably.
  • The maximum permissible pressure limit of the tools and attachments must always be greater than or equal to:

– The maximum operating pressure limit of the water jetting unit.

– The maximum permissible pressure limit set on the sealed safety device.

  • Attachments and jetting tools must be compatible with the system to which they are connected.
  • All systems must be equipped with a device to prevent unintentional use.
  • The pressurised water jetting system must be equipped with at least an emergency stop, which enables the shutdown of the assembly and the depressurisation of the water circuit.
  • Two controls:

– An instantaneous depressurisation control is to be used by the supervisor.

– A dead man control command to be used by the operator

  • After activating the emergency stop, before the system can be restarted, it must be reset.
  • The high-pressure water jetting system must be designed so that the opening or closing of one or more pieces of jetting equipment does not lead to an increase or decrease in the reaction force of other jetting equipment of more than 15%.
  • In a working environment presenting specific risks, the high-pressure water jetting system and all its attachments must meet additional requirements that apply to these environments. For example, in ATEX environments – where automated cleaning has one of its major fields of application – all the components of the equipment must meet all the ATEX compliances and must be marked indicating such compliance.
