What kind of protective measures should be implemented in automated industrial cleaning operations?

With automation in water jetting activities, the need for workers to wear PPE could be reduced or even potentially eliminated. Protective measures are aimed to protect all the workers performing the water jetting tasks, such as other persons who may be in the vicinity of the job site.

Collective protective measures could include the following:

  • Working areas will be adequately closed and warning signs will be posted in prominent locations, access points and perimeters.+
  • Access by people outside the waterjet team will be strictly prohibited while work is in progress. If any unauthorised entry occurs, all work will cease immediately.
  • The working area must have adequate drainage, ventilation and lighting facilities.

However, due to the specific risks of the facilities beyond those inherent to the water jetting jobs, which are eliminated with automation, some PPEs, such as hearing protection or respiratory protection may be needed. This point must be established jointly with the asset owner or coordinator.
